Confrontation Simulation Instructor Development Course

This three day course will focus on conducting scenarios for agencies that do not involve the use of non lethal training ammunition such as Simunition® FX® marking cartridges.  For agencies utilizing these training tools with their officers additional training is available to address specifics of this level of training through Ken Murray at Armiger Police Training www.armiger.net.

The most commonly asked questions in relation to Confrontation Simulations are:

  1. What are Confrontation Simulations?
  2. Why does our organization need to spend money to train instructors just to run scenarios?
  3. Are Confrontation Simulations a training tool or an assessment tool?

 What are Confrontation Simulations?

Confrontation Simulation training involves placing officers into structured scenarios which simulates a realistic operational situation. This type of training goes by many names the most common of which are scenario based training, reality based training and Confrontation Simulation training. Simulation training is designed to expose officers to realistic, job related situations where they experience potential environmental stressors thereby allowing them to utilize all their skills and tactics in a realistic, but controlled environment. Falling under the general classification of stress acclimation or stress inoculation training, simulations have been recognized as an important element of training for law enforcement professionals.

Why spend money to train instructors?

Although conducting Confrontation Simulation training sounds easy, there are a number of critical elements to conducting simulation training effectively. Without the proper knowledge, training and experience many instructors actually program officers for failure and destroy their confidence through the use of simulation training. When conducted properly however, Confrontation Simulations are an extremely valuable component of any law enforcement training program. The object of all properly designed and executed Confrontation Simulation training is to increase an officer’s competence and confidence.  Dr. Alexis Artwohl, a police psychologist and renowned law enforcement trainer, highlights this point when she says that “Training that does not instill confidence and a sense of mastery is wasted.”

Training instructors to safely and effectively develop, conduct and debrief Confrontation Simulations is valuable investment in risk management for any agency that wants to conduct effective training for their personnel. Properly trained instructors will be able to develop and facilitate effective training for their officers which will enhance their confidence and competence resulting in increased professionalism in the field. Confident, competence, professional officers are every agencies greatest asset in the field and in the court room.

Are Confrontation Simulations a training tool or an assessment tool?

Confrontation Simulations can be used for both training and evaluation. This type of training ideally should a part of basic or recruit training as well as a component of block or on duty training for in-service personnel. Confrontation Simulations can also be used as an assessment tool to test an officer’s ability to act in accordance with policy and legal standards.

The Confrontation Simulation Instructor Development Course developed by Winning Mind Training Inc. is designed to provide instructors with the foundation to develop and deliver safe, realistic and effective Confrontation Simulation Training to their officers.
